2. Ride the red train through tea country
The centre of Sri Lanka is an altogether different climate. The Mountain ranges and swooping valleys are cool and therefore offer a refreshing break from the cities and coastlines. The train line running from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya is one of the most breath-taking in the world and you can easily buy tickets from any station or online. Children will enjoy seeing locals board the train to sell traditional snacks and locally grown fruits you’ll all enjoy. Upon arrival in Nuwara Eliya you are greeted by rolling hills, colonial architecture and a collection of stunning waterfalls. Hiring a guide for the day from one of the many tourist offices makes the best use of time and money. A great day trip can be had trying the tea at the famous Mackwood’s plantation and viewing the St Clair falls.

4. Spend some time by the Sea
Sri Lanka is home to many great beaches, but the coves of Mirissa and Unawatuna are two favourites. Mirissa is unique with its two bays drawn out and sheltered by the peninsula at Parrot rock. Turtle hatcheries all along the south coast make a great stop for families because children are encouraged to release turtles into the sea. If you decide to venture offshore, Mirissa is home to Sri Lanka’s leading whale watching centres. Tour operators like Raja & the Whale offer ethical trips with excellent chances of spotting blue whales.

5. Get lost in Galle Fort
Galle’s historic fort is a fantastic mix of Dutch colonial architecture and modern restaurants and shops. The 36-hectare fort has preserved the classic architecture from the unruly sea. Adults and children alike can find hidden treasure amongst the winding cobbled streets. The chic Sri Lankan design stores will appeal to parents meanwhile the quirky themed stores and gelato stands appeal to kids. While you can happily spend a day exploring the winding pathways, be sure to make a stop along the Galle road first. The famous stick fishermen can be seen in action and for a small charge the whole family can give it a go.
