Bentota Beach
Sun seekers have called Bentota Beach ‘one of the best beaches’ that they have been to. It is not hard to see why, for the paradisical beach is free from tourist crowds. Beach bums in search of a quiet coast will find a tranquil paradise along Bentota’s sandy shores.
Families with a love for water sports will be spoilt for choices at Bentota Beach. The turquoise waters are excellent for swimming, snorkelling, bodysurfing and diving. Other water activities such as jet-skiing, parasailing and windsurfing are available at the nearby Bentota Ganga.
Beruwala Beach
The serene coasts of Beruwala Beach are perfect for a morning stroll or an afternoon of sunbathing. A smattering of handicraft stores, restaurants and bars dot along the coast, making it convenient for beach goers to grab an icy drink or a quick bite at any moment of the day. Seafood lovers will not want to miss out on feasting on a delectable meal at one of these beach front eateries. Do take note that strong undercurrents are present in the sea, so it is best to keep to the shallow waters along the coast.
Hikkaduwa Beach
One of the most popular beaches in Sri Lanka, Hikkaduwa Beach draws hordes of beach bums with its golden sand, azure waters and shady palms.
Surfing and diving are popular activities here. The dry season, lasting from the months of November to March, is the best time for surfing at the beach. Beginners can safely embark on their training dives at the shallow waters of Hikkaduwa. Avid divers should venture further offshore, for they will discover an excellent diving spot with crystal clear waters and a plethora of fascinating marine life.
Vacation makers hit by a bout of languor are likely to pick the option of lazing basking under the sun – a perfect beach activity along Hikkaduwa’s expansive coasts.
Negombo Beach
Located near Bandaranaike International Airport, Negombo Beach is an ideal spot for beach-loving families who do not wish to travel a long distance away from Colombo. It takes a quick thirty minutes to arrive upon the sandy shores of the coast from the airport by car.
Take leisurely strolls along the fine stretch of golden sand, and let your little ones make merry as they frolick along the coast. Do not miss the magical hour of sunset, for Negombo Beach promises to present a stunning sight. Similar to Beruwala Beach, the strong undercurrents of Negombo makes its waters unsuitable for swimming.
Weligama Bay
Families keen on venturing a longer distance away from the airport for their beach vacation will find their slice of paradise at Weligama Bay. A popular beach lying along Sri Lanka’s scenic southern coasts, Weligama boasts a fine stretch of soft, velvety sand and glistening waters.
Avid surfers and scuba divers will have plenty of reasons to venture to Weligama Bay, for it presents excellent water conditions for these activities. The soft beach waves makes it a suitable spot for beginners to take their first attempts at surfing, while advanced surfers seeking a greater challenge may venture towards nearby Mirissa or Midigama.
