Water Sports

The range of water sports in Sri Lanka is vast and caters to every experience level. You can choose from snorkelling to scuba diving and, of course, surfing. The south coast is perfect for beginners, who can take advantage of the small waves. The coves at Weligama and Hikkaduwa create a safe environment for a first attempt. Surf n’ Lanka have ISA qualified instructors and reasonable prices. However, if you know what you are doing, board rental is available up and down the beach for around 300-450 LKR.

Sailing boat on calm water

Sailing is a fun alternative, for those looking to try out a different water sport. Sail Lanka Charter runs day trips allowing you to try your hand at sailing with an experienced skipper. They are a national company and operate out of several stunning beach-side locations. Boats can also be hired without a skipper for those experienced at sailing. The freedom of sailing will also allow you to take in more of Sri Lanka’s beautiful coastline.

Hiking and Biking

There are numerous stunning hiking routes in Sri Lanka of varying difficulty. Sinharaja Rain Forest is only four hours south of Colombo and easily reached from Galle. It is rich in flora, fauna and hiking trails. Starting at the Kudawa Conservation Centre, you can find out more about the surrounding jungle. For those looking to take a leisurely hike, Giant Navada Tree Trail is suitable. However, if you are used to hiking, Sinhagala Nature Trail with its challenging terrain could be for you. It’s well worth investing in a guide for their inside knowledge and a keen eye for spotting wildlife.

Sri Lanka’s central tea country is ideal those who like a hike with a view.  The mountainous terrain offers several vantage points from which to take in the rolling landscape. Adam’s peak in Ella is one of the most popular. At 2243 meters high Adam’s peak is a moderate hike, but its unclear pathways mean it is necessary to hire a guide.  There are plenty of guides available in Ella’s town centre, and several routes up the mountain. The hike is particularly popular at sunrise as the climb is much more bearable in the cool. However, if you opt for a sunrise hike, be sure to bring a torch as the path can be uneven at points.

Ride Lanka offer adventurous mountain biking tours across Sri Lanka. Varying terrains allow for beginner and experienced routes. They offer packages including airport pick up and a packed itinerary to help you to explore rural Sri Lanka. In addition, their local and enthusiastic guides offer flexibility through custom tours.  Therefore, they can accommodate any other activities you are looking to tick off in Sri Lanka.
