Uda Kanda Villa sits on a hill-top and occupies a sprawling 3.5 acre rubber estate close to Galle. You’ll enjoy panoramic views out to the Indian Ocean towards the south, and sweeping vistas of rolling hills in the north. And while the villa is located about 10 minutes’ drive away from key attractions like UNESCO-listed Galle Fort and numerous beach, its tranquil ambience gives the impression that you’re residing far away from the hustle and bustle of Sri Lankan life.
All three bedrooms are large and elegantly appointed, with lofty high, vaulted ceilings, en suite bathrooms and outdoor terraces. The master bedroom has a king-sized bed and features an adjoining study, both guest bedrooms have a king-size bed, although the third can instead be made into two large twin beds. Quality linen, canopy mosquito netting, ceiling fans and soft, fluffy pillows help ensure a night of restful sleep.
A 50-foot infinity pool looks out to a lush, verdant landscape. Dry off while you lounge upon one of the poolside recliners or thick cushions under the ambalama. Lawned gardens frame the pool, while a spacious outdoor dining area comes equipped with everything you’d need for an alfresco feast.
The living areas at Uda Kanda Villa are bright and airy, with lofty ceilings and an indoor-outdoor concept. Sunlight cascades in to create well-lit spaces, all of which are decorated with a mix of antiques, and colonial-style furnishings. Guests enjoy the use of a capacious living and dining area, TV room and a Western-style open kitchen.
Uda Kanda Villa is a full-service property manned by five full-time staff, including an excellent cook, who will also shop for food. A baby cot and high chair are available upon request, as are child-minding, laundry transport services.
Uda Kanda Villa also offers yoga holidays, where yoga guests participate in a morning yoga class and an evening yoga-cum-meditation session each day. Guests are free to spend the rest of the day relaxing at the villa or outdoors sightseeing, and may choose from a variety of non-vegetarian and vegetarian options.
Uda Kanda Villa is conveniently located just four kilometres east of Galle. The region offers plenty to see and do - from the beaches and national parks, to touring tea plantations and historical landmarks.
Take a drive out to Unawatuna, a crescent shaped beach that offers excellent swimming, scuba diving and snorkeling - along with a good selection of seafood restaurants. About 30 minutes’ drive from Unawatuna is Weligama Beach, which draws surfing enthusiasts with its consistently fine waves.
Nature lovers won’t want to miss out on visiting the Sea Turtle Farm & Hatchery at Habaraduwa or joining in a whale watching tour at Mirissa Harbour (it’s best to join in a tour between the months of November to March). The popular Yala National Park, located about three and a half hour’s drive from Galle makes an excellent day trip destination - you’ll have the opportunity to get up-close with wildlife like elephants, bears, leopards and deers.
Galle Fort, a historic walled city first built in 1588 is a must-see attraction. Within the fortified walls lies a town of winding streets, beautifully restored churches and Dutch colonial buildings. The town also offers a wide array of restaurants, cafes, galleries and boutiques.
And while there are numerous tea estates all around the country, the Handunugoda Tea Estate sets itself apart with its comprehensive tea tasting session and informative guided tours. Other attractions that come with our recommendations include Lunuganga Estate, Brief Garden, Richmond Castle, Galgoda Sailatalaramaya Maha Vihara Temple and the Ariyapala Mask Museum.
